The San Joaquin Film Society presents the 2nd French Cinema Day, an illuminating SJFS World Cinema Series, featuring new, celebrated, and award-winning works from French filmmakers sharing contemporary experiences, historical events, insightful perspectives and innovative creations.
France, a nation rich with cinematic tradition will be celebrated with stories of family, romance, friendship, cultural exchange, globalization, history, coming-of-age, and ethical issues.
Featuring: the New French Shorts 2010 program with new short-length films from emerging artists making international and American premieres; a special screening of Philippe Lioret's 10-time French Academy Award-nominated drama "Welcome"; the Spotlight film presentation of "The Girl on the Train" - a captivating drama from master director André Téchiné; and the honorable presence of emerging French writer-director, Cédric Prévost, our guest artist who will fly in from Paris to join us for these two spectacular cinematic days!

On January 16, 2009, the inaugural San Joaquin Children's Film Festival opened with the California Premiere of the English-language version of "Azur and Asmar," (read more) the animated masterpiece and familial fairytale from world-renown French animator Michel Ocelot. The film debuted at the Director's Fortnight of Festival de Cannes in 2006.

At the 2nd San Joaquin International Film Festival (held May 14-23, 2009), in A World of Shorts, the Society presented Geoffroy de Crécy's "Dog Days" (read more); and Valentin Potier's "Tony Zoreil," (read more) which screened at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival and awarded the Unifrance Prize of Short Movie at Festival de Cannes 2008.

On August 30, 2009, the San Joaquin Film Society held its first French Cinema Day, featuring Agnés Varda's autobiographical film "The Beaches of Agnes," Claude MIller's masterpiece "A Secret," and a rare and riveting collection of New French Shorts, including the César-nominated "Last Illusions."


The San Joaquin Film Society, Inc. (SJFS) is the benchmark cinema arts organization in California's 400-mile Central Valley. The Film Society is home to the annual San Joaquin International Film Festival and year-round World Cinema Series. The Film Society celebrates cinema arts, multi-cultural appreciation, and global outreach through year-round productions of festivals and educational programs.
