MAKING HISTORY
The California Central Valley's premier celebration of global cinema will return to Stockton for its second year and will feature over 100 films from 30 countries, in 60 programs and events across the multi-cultural city. Featuring: a bold collection of international and award-winning narrative features, documentaries, American indies; highlights to include cinema spotlights, tributes, and an exhilarating collection of the world's top short films; guest filmmakers, parties, and programs for all ages. This will be eight memorable days of celebration, excitement, and surprises!
Regarded among the California Travel & Tourism Commission's new and exciting events of Spring 2008 during its inauguration from June 4 to 8, 2008, the festival showcased a dynamic collection of 54 feature and short films from 18 nations, in 34 events of screenings, galas, forums, conversations with filmmakers, and cultural arts programs in six historic venues in Stockton. The inaugural collection of films included films awarded with prestigious accolades and prizes from festivals such as a Berlinale®, Toronto®, Cannes®, Cinequest®, Tribeca®, and Sundance®.
In August 19th, 2008, Variety magazine announced that Beta Film (Germany) secured international television rights for the SJFF08 Best Film "The Clown and the Führer."
HOLLYWOOD NORTH
Retrospectively, the Stockton-San Joaquin County region was a major filming destination and known in the 1960s as “Hollywood North.” It is time for a revival. This momentous festival hopes to bring together people from all diverse backgrounds, to celebrate the art of cinema, to empower independent film and video artists, to honor local heritage and history, to promote the art of the film, and to forge international relations through media.
