SYNOPSIS

Co-produced and photographed by Stockton-born filmmaker, Jason Turner.

Veer explores America’s fast‐growing bicycling culture, and sub‐culture, by profiling five people whose lives are inextricably tied to bicycling and the bike‐centric social groups they belong to.

Gabriel Amadeus Tiller builds and rides “freakbikes”, and can often be found with Zoobomb, a group of people that ride small children’s’ bicycles downhill at high speed in the middle of the night. Through his participation in “radical bike culture” Gabe becomes a group organizer, and the newly‐formed ties to his group eventually lead him to become an activist and organizer in the larger community.

Scott is a bicycle rights lobbyist, fighting alongside the friends and family of cyclists killed by reckless drivers. A long and difficult legislative process, and open‐floor confrontations with a vocal opposition group, eventually leads Scott to the final vote in the state legislature on the controversial bill.

Lauren is a member of the Sprockettes, an all‐female mini‐bike dance team with a feminist slant. A self‐described outcast growing up in the suburbs, she finds confidence and strength in her bicycle‐dance performances, and acceptance in the close ties to her fellow dancers.

Gabe Graff finds a careers and purpose leading afterschool bike safety programs with elementary school students. When a burglary and the loss of important bicycle equipment and cash threaten his organization, he grapples with the shortage while continuing the program.

After being laid off from his job as a computer programmer, Steven travelled the world by bicycle. Inspired by his journey and the people he met, Steven dreams of starting a bicycling non‐profit group with the goal of connecting people from different cultural backgrounds. But Steven’s vision is threatened when his group is evicted from their workshop and meeting‐space, and it’s up to him to find another way.

All from different backgrounds, these peoples’ lives and their individual efforts intersect to create community change they never anticipated. Veer examines what it means to be part of a community, and how social movements are formed.
